This free inflation calculator supports two regions: US (using official Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-U data, 1913–2025) and EU (using Eurostat / ECB HICP data, 1996–2025). Enter an amount and two years to instantly see the inflation-adjusted value, total inflation, average annual rate, and purchasing power change. Annual average index values are used for year-to-year comparisons.
Adjusted value = amount × (CPI in target year ÷ CPI in start year). Example: $100 in 1990 (CPI 130.7) converted to 2024 (CPI 313.7) is about $240 — what you'd need in 2024 to buy what $100 bought in 1990.
Both track consumer prices, but methods differ. US CPI-U covers urban consumers and includes owners' equivalent rent for housing; EU HICP harmonizes methodology across member states and excludes owner-occupied housing. They aren't directly comparable, so the calculator keeps the regions separate.
Roughly 3% per year from 1913 through 2025 — with huge swings, from double-digit inflation in the 1970s and the World War eras to outright deflation in the early 1930s. At 3%, prices double about every 24 years (Rule of 72).
Inflation silently erodes cash: at 3% inflation, money in a zero-interest account loses about half its purchasing power in 24 years. Long-term plans should use real (inflation-adjusted) returns — and comparing salaries, prices, or portfolio values across decades requires a CPI adjustment first.
The inflation rate between two years is the percentage change in the CPI: inflation rate = (CPIlater − CPIearlier) ÷ CPIearlier × 100. Example using official BLS CPI-U values: from 1988 (CPI 118.3) to 1989 (CPI 124.0) the rate is (124.0 − 118.3) ÷ 118.3 × 100 ≈ 4.8%. To convert a dollar amount rather than find a rate, multiply by the ratio of the two CPI values.

Yes. US results use official Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) CPI-U data — the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, All Items, 1982–84=100 base — with annual average index values from 1913 through 2025. It is the same underlying series the BLS uses in its own inflation calculator.
A CPI inflation multiplier is the factor you multiply an old dollar amount by to express it in today's dollars: multiplier = CPItarget year ÷ CPIstart year. From 1913 (CPI 9.9) to 2025 (CPI 322.760) the multiplier is about 32.6×. Official BLS CPI data begins in 1913; pre-1913 figures rely on historical price estimates rather than the official index.
CPI (Consumer Price Index, BLS) tracks prices urban consumers pay and is the most common inflation measure. PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures, BEA) is the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge — a broader basket that usually runs slightly below CPI. PPI (Producer Price Index, BLS) measures wholesale prices producers receive, not consumer prices. This calculator uses CPI.
